Whale-watching is truly a magical experience. These giant, graceful creatures explore the Earth’s oceans, and getting the chance to see them up close is incredible. While the whale-watching experience is one that you will remember forever, there can still be some challenges when it comes to sailing on the water.

Helpful Tips to Stay Comfortable While Whale Watching

When we search for gray whales, blue whales and other baleen whales, we cruise out onto the open ocean. Here are some helpful hints to make your cruise more comfortable and enjoyable.

  • To prevent sea sickness, take motions sickness medication before the cruise. Although it may be calm in San Diego Bay, our Whale Watching cruise goes out on the open ocean and conditions may be bumpy once we leave the bay. Motion sickness medications containing Meclizine such as Bonine and Dramamine are the most effective at preventing sea sickness, but must be taken at least an hour before boarding the boat. Once you start to feel sea sick, it is too late. Wrist bands and ginger are not as effective at preventing sea sickness.

  • Keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
  • Water magnifies the suns rays, so be sure to wear sunblock and sunglasses. Sunglasses with polarized lenses let you see better.
  • Dress in layers and bring a jacket/coat. Even though it may be warm when you board the cruise, it can get chilly when out on the water.
  • Wear comfortable shoes since you may be standing for long time periods while watching whales.
  • Bring binoculars- they can help enhance your experience by letting you see details of the whales, seabirds, and other wildlife we may encounter.
  • If you bring a camera, be sure to spend time just watching and experiencing the whales and dolphins.
