This week we are reminded to take care of our incredible planet by celebrating both World Water Day and Earth Hour. At Hornblower Niagara Cruises we proudly participate in these days and work every day to make our planet a better place with our Respect Our Planet initiative.
Keeping The Earth Top of Mind
When you’re working on the Niagara River every day in the heart of the beautiful Niagara Gorge, it’s hard not to appreciate nature. Our crew and staff never take for granted the amazing views we see all the time, that guests from all over the world come from far and wide to share.
A part of being a business in one of the world’s natural wonders is respecting and taking care of the environment. Which is something we at Hornblower Niagara Cruises take very seriously. This week we are proud to help celebrate our planet with the world in a couple special ways.
The United Nations launched World Water Day in 1993 as a way to bring attention and resources to the world water crisis. The day is also used to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.
This international day of observance is meant to inspire people around the world to learn more about water-related issues, tell others about these issues and take action to make a difference, particularly in developing countries. This year and every year World Water Day is held on March 22nd.
Water is an extremely precious resource that we must all respect. Even when 2,271,247 litres of it go over a 52m tall drop every second!
This worldwide movement started by the World Wild Fund for Nature in 2007. Celebrated on a Saturday in March every year, over 7,000 cities and towns worldwide participate in turning off non-essential lights for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. as a symbol of their commitment to the planet.
Many landmarks have participated in Earth Hour over the years. The Eiffel Tower, the Statue of Liberty, the Sydney Opera House, and of course, Niagara Falls. This year on Saturday, March 25th, 2017 the lights on the Falls will again be turned off from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm for Earth Hour. This impactful display makes a powerful statement about being energy conscious and encourages standing up for our planet. Something we wholeheartedly believe in.
Our Respect Our Planet policy is in compliance with three prestigious and internationally recognized ISO standards that include, Environmental Management System Standard, Occupational Health & Safety Management System, and Quality Management System Standard.
Here are some of the other things we are doing to help make our environmental impact positive.
- Our boats are built and designed to operate to the greenest of standards. We’ve done this by replacing old engines with new ultra-efficient engines that comply with ETA Tier 2 Clean Standard.
- We use a biodiesel and a carbon offset program for select boat cruises.
- We exclusively use environmentally friendly cleaning products throughout our facility.
- We participate in annual community cleanups! Learn more here.
