What to expect on a New Year’s Eve Cruise?
Key Facts about City Cruises NYE Cruises
- All City Cruises New Year’s Eve cruises depart from Tower Pier (Tower Millennium Pier), Lower Thames Street, London EC3N 4DT.
- You are asked to arrive at the pier about 30 minutes before boarding.
- All our boats have outside decks as well as indoor heated saloons so you can choose between warmth and views.
- There is no specific dress code for New Years Eve events on the Thames, and no clothing types are expressly prohibited. However, we encourage you to take the opportunity to dress up for this memorable occasion.
What To Expect on the Night
Arrival & Queuing
- The pier will get busy well before boarding time so do expect crowds. Because it’s a fixed departure service and many people are coming for the same reason, expect crowds.
- When you arrive for your cruise, there will be a designated queue / check in area for boarding and ticket verification. Staff will be in high visibility clothing to direct people.
- After checking you in, staff will direct you to your designated queue.
- Boarding starts about 30 minutes before the advertised departure. If you arrive later than that window, you risk delays or possibly missing the boat.
Departures & Fireworks Positioning
- Boats leave promptly—City Cruises emphasise punctual departures.
- Boats usually manoeuvre into position on the Thames to give good views of the midnight fireworks. Being on an upper deck or outside deck helps, but views are not guaranteed to be perfect due to river traffic, weather or other boats.
Timing & Transport / Road Closures
- Roads around the Thames and central London are likely to begin closing early, particularly near Tower Pier, Embankment, and other major routes to the firework areas. Plan in advance so you are already en-route well before closures begin.
- Public transport (TfL, Tube, buses) will be on altered schedules or reduced service in the late-night hours. Some lines may close early or delay their first services after midnight. National Rail may also have restricted service. It’s important to check TfL and National Rail info for your return journey.
After Midnight: Ending & Going Home
- City Cruises returns you to the same pier (Tower Pier) after cruising back. The finish times vary by the cruise booked.
- Expect large volumes of people at or near Tower Pier, on the streets, and at nearby transport hubs. Disembarkation can take time.
- Check the last Tube, bus, and train times from wherever you need to get to. If your cruise ends after public transport has reduced or stopped, plan in advance (book taxi / rideshare or stay somewhere close).
- Be aware of disruption from road closures / pedestrian only zones which might complicate getting a taxi or walking.
