Freedom and Fireworks this 4th of July in Long Beach

We all know that we celebrate this holiday each year to commemorate the Declaration of Independence, signed July 4, 1776, by the Second Continental Congress. It was at this time that America declared its freedom from Great Britain and thus the birth of the United States of America, an independent nation. While many may know the story of that historical event, here are some fun facts about the United States that may surprise you.

  • Only two men actually signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, Charles Thompson and John Hancock. The other 54 signatures were collected over the next month.
  • Richard Stockton later recanted his signature after being captured by the British and was thrown in jail. A lawyer from New Jersey, Mr. Stockton was released to find all his property later destroyed or stolen by the British.
  • According to the United States Census Bureau, only about 2.5 million people were living in America in 1776. Today, there are over 333 million.
  • According to the U.S. Flag Code, you are in violation if you sell or display any article of merchandise upon which shall have printed, painted, attached, or otherwise placed a representation of the flag to advertise, call attention to, decorate, mark, or distinguish the article or substance on which it is placed. Luckily this violation isn’t enforceable as everyone dawns their best patriotic gear on July 4th!
  • July 4th was not officially made a federal holiday until 1870, nearly 100 years after the nation was founded.
  • Although we celebrate on the 4th of July each year, the date isn’t exactly accurate. The official vote actually took place two days prior then published on the 4th.
  • It is estimated that Americans will eat 150 million hot dogs over the 4th of July weekend!
  • There’s a secret message written on the back of the Declaration of Independence. No one knows who wrote the message, but it was believed to have been added during the Revolutionary War, and it says “Original Declaration of Independence dated 4th July 1776.”
  • Can you guess the average age of the signers? Benjamin Franklin was the eldest at 70 years old, and the two youngest signers were only 26: Thomas Lynch Jr. and Edward Rutledge.
  • More than 1 billion dollars are spent on fireworks each year. Only about 10 percent of fireworks displays are done professionally.
