Alcatraz is mysterious at any time of day, but for those who want a real thrill, check out the Island’s Night Tour, which is particularly curious at night. As the sun sets on the Island and the crowds begins to dissipate, Alcatraz becomes a little more intriguing.
The adventure begins at Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing, where passengers will board the day’s last ferry. While visitors of the Night Tour will enjoy the same encounters as Day Tour visitors, Cellhouse audio tour and the like, the intrigue begins with a private guided tour around Alcatraz Island, which points out the hidden spots used for attempted escapes and prison structures unreachable by foot. A guide will lead a walk up the hill to the Cellhouse with stops that highlight the layers of history from pre-Civil War and a military cannon, as well as a “diary” of family life on the Island.
Visitors can then tour the Cellhouse on their own with the award-winning audio presentation Doing Time: The Alcatraz Cellhouse Tour. In addition, Night Tour visitors can expect experiences that may include areas normally restricted when the masses are present during the Day Tour, including the Alcatraz hospital accommodations, the dark solitary confinement cells, stories of life inside from real prisoners and the intensity of a prison breakout as told by correctional officers who lived and worked on the Island. While the specific areas of Alcatraz Island are not revealed before the Night Tour experience, all visitors will encounter something unique…experiences that are not readily available during the Day Tours. Because the night tour is so popular, it is recommended that tickets are booked within the 90-day window of opportunity.
FAQs – Alcatraz Cruises’ Illustrious Night Tour
What is the Alcatraz Night Tour?
The Alcatraz Night Tour is a truly unique way to experience Alcatraz Island after dark. You’ll enjoy exclusive nighttime access, special programs, fewer crowds, and unforgettable views of the San Francisco skyline as the sun sets. It’s immersive, atmospheric, and unlike any daytime visit.
How is the Night Tour different from the Day Tour?
Great question! The Night Tour includes everything offered during the day, plus:
- Evening ferry rides with stunning bay views
- Special ranger-led programs and talks
- Access to areas sometimes unavailable during the day
- A quieter, more mysterious nighttime atmosphere
It’s our most popular tour for a reason!
What time does the Night Tour start?
Night Tour departures typically begin in the late afternoon or early evening, depending on the season. Exact departure times are listed when you book your tickets, so be sure to check your confirmation details.
Where do I board the ferry?
The only authorized provider for transportation and tickets is through Alcatraz City Cruises. All Alcatraz City Cruises ferries depart from Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing along San Francisco’s Embarcadero. We recommend arriving at least 30 minutes early to allow time for check-in and boarding.
What’s included with my Night Tour ticket?
Your ticket includes:
- Round-trip ferry transportation
- Access to Alcatraz Island at night
- The award-winning Cellhouse Audio Tour
- Special evening programs and exhibits
Once you’re on the island, you’re free to explore at your own pace.
Is the Cellhouse Audio Tour included?
Yes! Our famous Cellhouse Audio Tour—narrated by former inmates and correctional officers—is included and available in multiple languages. It’s self-guided, so you can listen when and where you like.
What should I wear for the Night Tour?
Layers are key! Evenings on San Francisco Bay can be cool and breezy, so we recommend a warm jacket and comfortable walking shoes. Alcatraz has hills, so good footwear makes a big difference.
Can I take photos during the Night Tour?
Absolutely! Nighttime offers incredible photo opportunities—from glowing city lights to dramatic views of the island. Just keep in mind that some indoor areas may have low lighting.
Is the Night Tour good for families?
Yes, many families enjoy the Night Tour! That said, the darker setting and historic themes can feel a bit spooky for younger children. Parents know best—but older kids and teens usually love it.
Is the Alcatraz Night Tour accessible?
Yes. The ferry is wheelchair accessible, and accessibility options are available on the island, including the S.E.A.T. (Sustainable Easy Access Transport) tram. Let us know ahead of time if you need assistance—we’re happy to help.
Do Night Tour tickets sell out?
They do—and quickly! The Alcatraz Night Tour is extremely popular, so we strongly recommend booking in advance to secure your preferred date.
