Life on the Island - Statue City Cruises

For many the immigrants arrival at Ellis Island would last anywhere from one week to a few months. If there were a concern with a passenger that had to do with legal or medical the passenger would be removed and held in one of the building hospital quarters located adjacent to the main level entrance. Depending on the situation the person would either be kept on the island for a week or month or be deported back to their original country. The hospital on the island was one of the largest public health hospital in United States. There were twenty-two hospital buildings spread over two islands. Due to the status of the hospital and its sizing of staff that employed over 300 doctors, nurses and other medical staff, the hospital was well known to draw in medical observers from the United States Europe.
