York’s Museum Gardens, home to a renowned botanical collection, occupy the historic site of St Mary’s Abbey, founded in 1088, with ruins reflecting the abbey’s influential role in English history.

York’s City Walls, originally built by the Romans in 71 AD and reinforced in the 12th century to protect against the Scots, span around the city and remain largely intact despite damage from the English Civil War.

Lendal Bridge, an iron Gothic structure designed by Thomas Page to improve access to the railway station, replaced a ferry service and was toll-operated until 1894, with its toll booths now serving as shops and cafes.
