The Thames is the heart of London and it is no wonder that a lot is happening on and around the river this summer. With ample of events, festivals, markets and the daily boat traffic, it is a lively and bustling place.
There are a few options to experience the river and its surroundings. Walking the Southbank and Bankside, starting at probably the most famous ferris wheel in the world: London Eye, and finishing at iconic Tower Bridge, is a visitor’s and local’s favourite. Main reason for this is that it provides you with some unique viewing points of iconic landmarks such as Big Ben, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Shard and the Tower of London.

Not only that, but it will also allow you to visit any of the events and sights you will see on the way. What about a little sit-down on the real sandy beach in front of the Southbank Centre? Take in some acrobatic comedy at Underbelly Festival, or see a classic Shakespeare play at Shakespeare’s Globe. For the finest modern art, head next door to Tate Modern – and don’t forget to enjoy that spectacular view of the Thames and beyond from the 10 floor viewing platform.

Feeling a bit munchy? Why not take a stroll down to historic Borough Market where market traders are awaiting your visit with the freshest British and international produce.

By now you have passed several pieces of history, including the 1144 Clink Prison site and the replica of the first English vessel that ever circumnavigated the globe: Golden Hinde II. And can you spot the rose window on Clink Street? This is a leftover of the medieval Winchester Palace.

Before walking over the famous Tower Bridge, don’t forget to visit London Bridge Summer Festival if you are around in June and July. Watch live sports events on big screens in the amphitheatre of the Scoop, sample a taste of the Fringe with comedians performing on the river side and participate in disco yoga (if you are up for it that is!).
We get you. Sometimes walking is just a little bit too tiring. And you might want to see the river sights from a more unique angle? Why not hop on a sightseeing boat at Westminster, London Eye, Bankside or Tower Pier? Or explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site Maritime Greenwich by taking a relaxing cruise down there.
