As early as 1869, military inmates began tending the Gardens of Alcatraz. Many of these inmate gardeners had no horticulture experience, but with vocational training and donated plants, they were able to transform the barren rock into extensive planted terraces, including a rose garden and cutting gardens overflowing with brightly colored flowers.

Visiting the Gardens at Alcatraz

Alcatraz Island is open to visitors every day year-round except for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Although there is not an entrance fee for the garden tour, there is a charge for the ferry service, supplied by Alcatraz City Cruises.

도슨트가 진행하는 아일랜드 정원 투어는 매주 금요일과 일요일 오전 9시 45분에 알카트라즈 선착장에서 시작하여 일주일에 두 번 진행됩니다. 관심이 있으신 분은 33번 부두에서 하루 중 첫 번째 또는 두 번째 페리를 타고 출발하세요. 투어는 대부분의 방문객이 출입할 수 없는 정원을 포함하여 복원된 모든 정원을 안내합니다. 또한 매주 수요일 오전 11시부터 오후 2시까지는 도슨트가 상주하여 질문에 답변해 드리는 장교 구역(Officers' Row)을 방문할 수 있습니다.
