With the first hint of cold starting to set in, it’s tempting to envision a winter of Netflix and chill all season long, but don’t let the weather keep you from enjoying some of the most magical moments New York City has to offer. Here are few of the iconic, fun and seriously bizarre things you can do this winter in NYC.
South Street Seaport
One place we love, since it’s close to our Pier 15 location is the South Street Seaport. As always, there are a whole lot of events during the holidays at the seaport. You can see what’s coming up here. The Seaport Holiday Market is open every day during December from 11am-8pm. You’ll find artisanal goods and gifts, with 10 boutique-style vendors covering everything from jewelry, stuff for the kids through to food. Find gifts for the whole family.
Stores include: Bergies / Om Aroma / This Pie Is Nuts / BrooklynMadeStore / G and G /Infinity Lights / It’s Always Christmas in NY / Mistura Timepieces
Of course there are NYC winter markets everywhere, you can find more here.
Ice Skating in Central Park
You might have missed out on your chance to win tickets to Lite FM’s Skating in Central Park but that doesn’t mean you still can’t go. There’s nothing more iconic than Wollman Rink in Central Park during the winter, you’ve seen it in a thousand movies, why haven’t you done it? There’s no time like the present.
Sledding on Pilgrim Hill
For those who don’t know, you can hit the slopes in Central Park… not ski slopes, sledding slopes! You’ll find Pilgrim Hill, a short walk from the entrance at 72nd Street and Fifth Avenue. And, with the steepest hills, it’s the best spot in the park for sledding… you’ll have to bring your own sled!
Coney Island Polar Bear Swim
Okay, so this isn’t one we’re recommending you partake in but it’s definitely worth a watch. The Coney Island Polar Polar Bears Swim Club takes a dip every Sunday from November through until April. They have a special swim on new Year’s Day, and it’s all for a good cause! If you can handle it.
Rockefeller Christmas Tree
It’s a New York tradition, even if you have to battle the crowds. When there’s a little snow falling and you see the lights of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree… it’s all worth it. While you’re there, take another opportunity to go ice skating in the outdoors at The Rink at Rockeffeller, just below the Christmas Tree. Another iconic experience.
Radio City Christmas Spectacular
Another one of the iconic NYC winter activities. And, of course, if you haven’t done it, you really should. The spectacular features the world-famous Rockettes. The Rockettes have been performing in New York City since 1932, so you know it has to be good. Featuring over 100 performers, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular runs until January 3rd.
SantaCon
Probably another one we’re not so sure you’ll want to participate, possibly something worth viewing from a distance if it happens to pass by. Santacon is a large pub crawl attended by people dressed up as Santa. It does get messy but it’s also quite a sight!
