The changing of the seasons is any environmentalists favourite time of year. And here in Niagara Falls, we can get spoiled with beautiful fall colours and cooler weather perfect for hitting the hiking trails.

If you are not lucky enough to live in the Niagara Region, you can still enjoy our beautiful microclimate. With the growth in ecotourism, you now have many options for environmentally friendly activities in Niagara.

One of the most exciting natural aspects to the Niagara Escarpment is, of course, Niagara Falls! And we are proud to not only be the only Canadian operator of boat tours into Niagara Falls but also striving to be the most environmentally friendly.

What is Ecotourism?

As a new branch of the tourism industry, many are still confused by what ecotourism is. By definition ecotourism is tourism that focuses on exotic, often threatened, natural environments, especially to support conservation efforts and observe wildlife.

Here in the Niagara Region we have many incredible ecotourism attractions and reasons to visit.

Everything from taking in the native bird populations to exploring biodynamic, sustainable vineyards, we’ve got it all!

And if it’s eco-friendly photography opportunities you’re looking for, Niagara Falls is the star of the show. Getting up close and personal with the thundering wonder is an epic experience that everyone should do at least once in their lifetime. We like to say it’s #BucketListApproved!

The Niagara Escarpment

The Niagara Escarpment is one of the world’s natural wonders and is recognized as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. This incredible 725-kilometre long escarpment was formed over 450 million years ago as a seabed.

Millions of years and many glacial activities resulted in creating the water flows and dramatic landforms of the Niagara Escarpment and Niagara Falls.

The Escarpment is also home to a large assortment of flora and fauna including:

36 species of reptiles and amphibians
53 species of mammals
90 species of fish
more than 350 species of birds
